Travel Planning and Arrangements

Flights to Nassau
One thing we can share from all the flying we've done in the last year is that flight costs go up and down from day to day and week to week. We scan flight costs regularly and jump on a good deal when we find one. We'll send out an e-mail if ever we see particularly good airfare prices, but (for now), here are some of our travel tips.

Comparison websites (our favorites are www.orbitz.com and www.sidestep.com) give a great overview of airfare costs. Often the best fares are found going directly to an airline's website when there are fare sales.

There are direct flights from New York to Nassau and from Florida to Nassau. Flights from LA and Boston require a stopover someplace, probably in Florida.

We've seen several deals for flight + hotel combinations, so you might check that out on the various travel websites, rather than looking for flights and hotels separately.

Late-breaking airfare and hotel news ~

>>> Cheaptickets.com has some hot prices - roundtrip airfare plus 3 nights hotel for under $400
>>> per person from NYC for some of the hotels in the offer. We'd recommend the Nassau Beach Hotel
>>> or The Wyndham from among the choices offered. The page comes up with Miami filled-in – just
>>> replace it with your city.

>>> If you happen to be booked on JetBlue's fantastic flight 721 (12:05pm departure) from
>>>
JFK to Nassau - this flight has been cancelled for midweek departures, so you'll need to make
>>> alternate plans. Flight 721 still goes (for $74!) on Friday thru Monday, but not Tue/Wed/Thu.
>>> Bummer. JetBlue may already have automatically re-booked you on Flight 719 (8am departure),
>>> but be sure to confirm.

>>> Travelocity has newly-published $183 and $203 roundtrip fares (plus about $20 taxes and fees)
>>> between LAX and FLL on American Airlines (nonstops), US Airways, United, Northwest, and
>>> Frontier (1-stop). You'd then need to add a FLL - Nassau flight. Click here to see the fare. Act fast!!

>>> Crazy $9 fare to Nassau from NYC on Spirit Air!!! No kidding - $9!!! Nine. Nueve. Nuef. El Niño!!
>>>
This fare is available NYC to Nassau from 12/3 to 12/15 except 12/8, and returning to NYC on 12/13.
>>> With taxes and fees, the total round-trip comes to just $78! This fare truly cannot be beat.
>>>
The $9 one-way fare can also be coupled with Spirit's other fares for a round-trip total ranging
>>> from about $174 to $250. Flights must be booked between 10/31 and 11/7 and they are going FAST!
>>> Click here for the special deal.

>>> Orange Hill Beach Inn is requiring a 3-night minimum stay for bookings made directly
>>> through them. But they have listed a block of rooms on several travel sites for as little as
>>> a 1-night stay, and with rates only 3 dollars more than our "special" wedding rate. So if you're
>>> looking for 1 or 2 nights there, book it through one of these sites – and
act fast because the online
>>> batch is almost sold out:
  expedia.com – travelocity.com – hotels.com – sidestep.com

>>> on American Airlines and US Airways. Act fast!!

Hotel Suggestions
The B&B where we're having the wedding, A Stone's Throw Away, is a truly beautiful intimate spot. It has only 10 rooms, and we'll be taking over the whole place. All the rooms are spoken for (sorry!), but you may want to check out the photos at www.astonesthrowaway.com.

The best deal in town can be found at a hotel just down the street from A Stone's Throw called Orange Hill Beach Inn. Rooms are simple, some of them have kitchens, and they are directly across the road from a lovely small ocean beach. They also have a small café on site. Orange Hill is definitely “no frills,” and is a favorite of serious divers due its laid-back, simple atmostphere. We’ve negotiated a special rate of $107 per night for a double room and $92 for a single – these prices include all taxes and service charges.

Resort lovers will truly have the experience of a lifetime at the Atlantis resort on Paradise Island. It's only about a 15- to 20-minute drive from the wedding site, but it's a world unto itself. Neither of us is a “resort person,” but Atlantis is no ordinary resort - it has a sprawling campus with multiple towers of varying character, many restaurants, a casino, an incredible spa, a “kids' camp,” fabulous ocean beach, and world-class aquatic and marine park. Check out the website for the complete picture. The room rates can be astronomical, but we've seen some good discounted rates. We recently checked hotels.com and found a good deal for their less expensive Beach Tower - rates were listed starting at $169.67 per night. If you stay here, don't miss the water slides (just get over your fear and do it!) and the thallosotherapy pool in the spa - amazing.

If you're interested in Atlantis, but want to avoid the Atlantis price tag, check out Comfort Suites, also on Paradise Island. It is a nice basic hotel, with its own pool, and it's just across the street from Atlantis. All Comfort Suites guests have full access to all the facilities at Atlantis. This is truly a great deal! For the best rate at the Comfort Suites, check out www.hotels.com.

For a trés chic, indulgent island experience, check out Graycliff. It's beautiful and elegant in classic Colonial style, and right in the center of downtown Nassau. We hear the food there is out of this world – it's the only 5-star restaurant in the Carribean!! The also have their own cigar company which is well known in the cigar world.

Also in downtown Nassau is the venerable British Colonial Hilton. Built on the site of what was formerly Old Fort Nassau, this is a gracious large hotel right in the heart of downtown. It has a semi-private beach, pool, patio, restaurants, and many other facilities. Kids stay free in room with 2 adults in existing bedding. This is a fine choice, especially for families and those wanting full hotel amenities without the resort vibe.

Closer to the wedding site is another area called Cable Beach that has several resort options. The beach there is spectacular and there are often deals to be found at many of the resorts. These are more typical resorts. We’ve read good things about the Wyndham Nassau Resort and a recent rate at hotels.com was $149/night – stay for 3 nights and the third night FREE! This works out to be about $100/night. There's also the more intimate Nassau Beach Hotel, and the pricey but delicious Sandals Nassau (couples only).

The larger resorts provide baby-sitting services and most include some organized activities for kids. For example, both Atlantis and the Wyndham have kids' camps for ages 4-16. Check each hotel for their specific offerings.

Passport/document info
U.S. citizens entering The Bahamas are required to show proof of citizenship with either a passport (current or expired within five years) or two forms of identification, one of which has to have a photo. For example, you may bring your birth certificate and a driver's license. Immigration and customs at Nassau are quite relaxed, but we do think bringing a passport is the most reliable option. Note: on your return, you clear U.S. customs and immigration in the Nassau airport, which makes things quite easy when you arrive at your U.S. destination.

For persons 16 years of age and younger:
A birth certificate is all that is required. If the traveler is a student and possesses a student ID, the traveler should also carry the student ID to facilitate being processed by Bahamas Immigration.

For more information, click here and look at “current requirements.”
